#SIXTIESLADS – OUTWARD BOUND BOYS

The first Outward Bound school was founded,in 1941, by Kurt Hahn and Lawrence Holt.

When I went down to Devon to photograph their work in the early 60s, the movement was growing in popularity as more more young men volunteered for the tough, open air training they offered.

My photographs show an Outward Bound lad preparing to scale the cliff face. I often wonder what happened to him, so if you know do please get in touch.
Shot on a Rolleiflex camera, 1/250 sec at f5.6 with Kodak HP3 120 film.
In tomorrow’s post  we’ll look in on Major Monkman’s highly disciplined young ‘soldiers’. Teenage lads he claimed to have saved from lives of crime. Others, pointing to their black uniforms, accused him of running a neo-Nazi squad.
